Felix and Matt - Pitch Preferences

Following up on where I began with Mr. Pie and his PITCHf/x data, I decided to compare him to Matt Murton.

Despite the small and differing sample sizes (342324 pitches for Pie and 555 pitches for Murton), I think there's a picture of their differences that's already clear.

I've flipped the columns to match-up the lefty/right difference. I can also split out by pitcher hand, but the data sets get too small.
These numbers are wrong - new post coming

  1. Felix gets worked away a lot more, and doesn't get much inside

  2. Matt sees a more even distribution around the zone

  3. Felix chases the low and away stuff, with poor contact rates

  4. Matt does like pitches up-and-in, with amazingly consistent contact

Who would you like to see get 400 AB's next year?

NO problem at all with your alnalysis. the data is undisputable. the only thing that I would say (as a believer that we should have always given Matt a better chance...Dusty) is that talent and upside are a factor. You have to give Felix a chance without feeling the pressure of competition. He is also a serious plus on defense over Matt. Matt is a clutch bat and should not not not be traded, but you have to respect the potential of Pie.

Pie has tools, but no track record of hitting, kind of like Corey Patterson. And very much unlike Murton, who has raked in high school, college, Cape Cod, and the minors. In the majors, he's proven he can hit and work a pitcher. Pie hasn't even hit AAA pitching with any success.
That said, I think they both have a place on the team, but I'm not overly optimistic about Pie, as much as I enjoy watching him play.

I take back part, not all, of the above comment. Pie hit just as well at AA as Murton, based on un-adjusted OPS, and at a younger age. Still no success at AAA despite over 850 PA's

I'll have a follow-up post soon.
