Gammons on Roberts, Ceda and Pie

Peter Gammons has a brief note in today's piece on ESPN Insider (sub. req.)

The Cubs may lust for Brian Roberts as the perfect part, but they won't put right-hander Jose Ceda or outfielder Felix Pie in the deal, so Roberts is going to stay in Baltimore. For now.

Who would you rather have, this guy

or these two guys

I like what we've got.

Me too. I'm just ready for those rumors to die down finally.

Considering how heavy they were, I'd say they have died down. Not dead, but close.

Is Ceda the next Lee Smith or what? The comparisons are already becoming cliche, but, if the shoe fits....

The Cubs signed Alex Cintron to a minor league deal according to Bruce Levine. Levine had said the Cubs were interested in him if they were sending Cedeno to the O's so maybe the deal is close? Who knows at this point?

I don't think Cintron is an improvement over what Cedeno is capable of, but he's probably no worse than what Cedeno has done so far.

He might be the next Lee Smith, but I think he has a long way to go yet. He's close to unhittable and that's something you can't teach. His control is horrific and that's probably something you can improve on so he's got a shot to be a very good pitcher in a few years.

I just posted some numbers on Cintron.

BTW, LOHO had a note from the Sun Times about Cedeno being 1 of 3 guys not to report yet.
