Jorge L. Ortiz interviewed Carlos Marmol in Santiago on Monday and got some good material.
he hasn't been told what role he'll play with the Chicago Cubs next season, so the hard-throwing reliever is making his own statement by pitching brilliantly in his native Dominican Republic
Just how brilliantly?
Marmol was untouchable during the Dominican league playoffs — a stage of the season when major leaguers populate rosters — allowing one hit and no walks or runs while striking out 19 in 12 innings.
OK, that's pretty freakin' impressive.
The Cubs are letting him play, but they're limiting his innings
... to 2 2/3 innings the rest of the tournament. Marmol says the Cubs asked him not to pitch more than four innings.
That doesn't include Tuesday's one inning save.
He wants the ball
"I definitely would like a shot at it. Being a closer is the kind of role that really brings out the passion in you. It's my goal."
Hendry drops a hint
"In a perfect world you'd like him to get more seasoning, but at the same time, he's got great stuff," Cubs general manager Jim Hendry said. "He's got the stuff and the temperament for it, no doubt. Whether it's this year or the next, he's going to be a closer."
Regarding the October let-down,
Marmol...was too pumped up and lost command of his slider, his signature pitch.
And he does have the right mentality - or short memory
"It's not something I've been replaying in my mind. All you can do is try your best. It happens."
Juan Marichal is impressed
I think he's going to be a superstar and a great closer.
Me too, Juan, me too.
