Another Round of Cuts; Today's Game

Cubs sent some more guys packing

Jeeff Samardzija --> AA Tennessee
Shingo Takatsu --> Unconditional release
Juan Mateo --> AAA Iowa
Jake Fox --> AAA Iowa
Eduardo Campusano --> Minor League camp
Luis Figueroa --> Minor League camp
JD Closser --> Minor League camp

Updated: Almost forgot, Adam Harben was sent down on Monday

No real surprises, perhaps I thought Fox might have stuck around a little longer, but we'll probably see him in some more Spring games.

Today's Game

The Cubs take on the A's today. Carlos Zambrano gets the start. Also scheduled to pitch today:

Jose Ascanio, Scott Eyre, Bob Howry, Carlos Marmol, Kerry Wood, Michael Wuertz.

I don't see how all these guys get in today, but I guess they'll be available.

The A's send Greg Smith out to start today, and he'll be followed, in some order/fashion, by Jerry Blevins, Gio Gonzalez (who also started the previous Cubs-A's spring match-up, and the ex-ChiSox prospect looked good), and closer Huston Street.

I'm disappointed Fox was optioned to Iowa so quickly. I think it means one of two things. Either the team is set to begin the season with Murton as a 4th outfielder (which could be entertaining if he's asked to play CF) or they're confident they're going to make a trade for one. Which do you think?

Right now, the Cubs better be confident, and right, about getting another CF. As much as Pie should play, he'll need to sit against a lot of a lefties, and we need insurance. Kosuke hasn't played in CF yet, we know Soriano is scary there. I don't even want to imagine Murton there. I seriously doubt it has even been considered. Josh Kroeger, on the other hand, could be getting a look.
If only Fox could play center and catch. That would be a trick.

Kroeger's left handed though. I can only find what he's done against lefties in 2007 and while it was much better than Pie, it also came with a .326 BABIP in Iowa and a BABIP over .330 in Tennessee (neither place did he post an .800 OPS). Pie's BABIP against lefties at Iowa was .236 on the other hand (.530ish OPS).

Pie also hit better against lefties in the DWL than he did against righties.

I'm not opposed to having a righty around to sit Pie against some of the tougher lefties, but I don't want a strict platoon. Pie needs to be given a chance to play every day and a chance to hit some lefties as well. I don't think you make a 23-year old a platoon player, especially one who has the potential that Pie has. I think that would be a very big mistake. If you get into August and you're in the race and Pie isn't doing much against lefties you can start a more strict platoon, but I wouldn't do that until August at the earliest.
