As we delve into March, I start making more use of my ESPN Insider subscription. Jason Grey checks-in today with a bunch of notes from Spring Training, and he starts with the Cubs.
Since there's no PITCHf/x in Spring games, I'm grateful for these numbers on Kerry Wood
Here are my radar gun readings for his inning of work: 97, 95, 89 (slider), 94, 98, 94, 96, 96, 97, 86 (slider), 96.
Your radar readings may vary, but, wow. Can he throw consecutive days? Three?
Grey disagrees with a local writer on Wood's main competition
A beat writer from the Chicago Sun-Times suggested it is Carlos Marmol's job to lose
And drops this on just how main that competition is
I do think it's safe to say Bob Howry is out of the running.
Grey continues on to say some nice things about Sean Gallagher, and basically guffaws at Dempster-the-Starter.
Cubs.com reported on the impending cuts
The Cubs' front office was to meet after Thursday's game to discuss roster cuts
That's either (a) repeating or (b) confirming a prior story. We'll see what leaks tomorrow. I suspect the Cubs will demote pitchers in quantity, since the innings are getting scarcer as the starters are stretching out.
Ted Lilly gets the ball tomorrow against the M's. Lou is going to play for the win, they need to start getting into the habit.
