I'm getting antsy for real competitive baseball. To help pass the time while the days get longer, I'll keep myself busy with numbers.
The M's signed Carlos Silva this off-season. According to Baseball Reference, his #4 Age 28 comp is Julian Tavarez - and the gap between 1 and 4 is small. Would you pay Tavarez $48 million? I didn't think so.
Here's Silva's stuff. My take ends up matching ESPN's (sub.req.) pretty closely, with a lot of fastballs, a mix of sliders and change-ups, and the occasional curve. I call them 2, 1, 4 and 3.
Standard PFX (movement) chart. First the full scatter, and then the average pitches.
Release points (oh, yeah, these are all Home Dome games, y=50, July thru Sept 2007)
The slider comes from a slightly different spot.
Outcomes
Not an impressive fastball (#2), the off-speed stuff seems more effective, especially the slider (#1)
