According to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, Chris Carpenter has had a set-up back in his recovery from Tommy John surgery.
Former Cy Young Award winner Chris Carpenter was examined in St. Louis on Friday after experiencing renewed discomfort in his surgically repaired right elbow and is likely to seek a second opinion regarding his condition soon.
The news isn't all bleak for the Cubs' rival.
Carpenter's setback occurs as fellow starters Matt Clement and Mark Mulder continue their rehabilitations. Both are scheduled to pitch today in a doubleheader for Class AA Springfield.
It's a Texas League match-up against the Northwest Arkansas Naturals, part of the Kansas City Royals' farm system.
The health of Carpenter, Mulder and Clement could be important stories all Summer, and the outcome could make the difference between a close race and a laugher.
Updated 6/15
Mulder and Clement both got a win, and neither issued a walk. Seeing how they both went five innings, they may be just one or two more starts away from getting off the DL.
