Did the Cubs Just Whiff on a Good Lefty?

The Giants signed Jeremy Affeldt for two years, $4 million per. That's pretty dang good. Since becoming a full time relief pitcher, Affeldt has excelled - despite calling hitters' parks home. The guys at Fangraphs picked him as a bargain this offseason, and they were right. You can check out his numbers there, and some PITCHf/x below.

I suppose it's unfair to say anyone, including the Cubs, whiffed on this guy. He went to San Francisco so quickly - the first signee of the season - Affeldt may have been targeting them all along.

He's gradually changed his pitch mix, over the end of 2007 through 2008

Got that? Lefty, $4 mil per season, 95 mph fastball and a nasty breaking ball. Plus a dirty change-up that's almost 90 mph.

Harry,

I'm a big fan of this site, I check it almost every other day and I was hoping you'd post something on Affedlt.

I've got a PFX question for you if you don't mind. I noodle around with PFX data and I was wondering if you had any tips on how to mass download all the XML data for a certain pitcher to run analysis on, like how you've done here with Affedlt. Does this require using a spider to parse the MLB Gameday site and then using data basing software? I love an easy way to grab all the data for a certain pitcher, and dump it into a spreadsheet.

Thanks for your time.
