The New York Daily News thinks the Yankees will let Bobby Abreu walk.
[T]he Bombers have a surplus of outfielders - Melky Cabrera, Johnny Damon, Brett Gardner, Hideki Matsui and Xavier Nady - under contract, in addition to the organization’s top hitting prospect, Austin Jackson.
Noting Fukudome's benching, after dismissing both New York teams, Jesse Spector had this to say
[O]ne team to watch could be the Cubs...The Rays and Marlins have unsettled situations, but neither of those teams is exactly in the business of shelling out big free-agent bucks or trading prospects for established players.
Not exactly an exhaustive run-down of the league, but, it is true, the Cubs are certainly players for a quality left-handed hitting right fielder.
Abreu has started at least 150 games in each season from 2000-2008 and continues to hit and get on base at age 34. He stole 22 bases in 2008 (10th straight year with at least 20, 11th with 19) but was caught 11 times, resulting in his worst success rate since 1999. He's also shown a decrease in walk rate since switching leagues, but still gets on base 37% of the time. That's nothing to snort at.
I don't think a contract that guarantees more than two years would be wise, and I'd rather see Adam Dunn. But Abreu would be an upgrade, barring injury.
