The Royals made another move today, this time sending Ramon Ramirez to Boston for Coco Crisp. Coincidentally, Crisp was a subject of Cub-related rumors prior to the acquisitions of Jim Edmonds and Reed Johnson last year. As noted by MLB.com, this opens up another bullpen spot and provides KC with more trade candidates on their roster.
By obtaining Crisp and [Mike] Jacobs [in an earlier deal with Florida], the Royals have created a surplus at first base and in the outfield. Obviously, Moore has some trading chips at hand ... it freed David DeJesus "to play multiple positions in the outfield" as he moves from center....Perhaps, but DeJesus ... seems the logical left fielder to go with Crisp in center and Jose Guillen in right....Mark Teahen, who's started in both left and right and is considered an everyday player.....Joey Gathright, a speedster who was the fourth outfielder last season....It's been speculated that Teahen might be traded, although word from Chicago downplays the Cubs' reputed interest....Along with Jacobs at first base, the Royals also have Ross Gload, Billy Butler, Ryan Shealy and Kila Ka'aihue in the picture....could even open third baseman Alex Gordon to the market.
Ross Gload? Wtvr. Gathright is awful, too. DeJesus, Guillen, Jacobs and Crisp ain't going anywhere, Shealy is a righty, Ka'aihue is a prospect, Butler is another righty. That leaves Mark Teahen.
OK, no news here, move along. Unless the Padres could use something Kansas City has. Elvis Andrus? Say Elvis leaves for San Diego, along with some of those extra bats mentioned above, we send KC some bullpen depth and Darwin Barney (or facsimile thereof) along with whatever the Padres want. So, the Cubs will end up signing Randy Johnson.
