A little blip in the Winter Meeting notes from Cubs.com:
Goals accomplished: Hendry got the impression from representatives of free-agent outfielders available that the Cubs were their top choice. That should help in negotiations. He also talked to reps for Randy Johnson, who could be a part of the rotation, and catcher Paul Bako, who could return to the team as backup to Geovany Soto.
Quite the lofty "goals", way to go.
Like last night's subject, Chris Coste, Bako will be 37 next year. His career slash line of 231/305/317 is close to Marcel, which has him at 223/295/322 with a paltry wOBA of .276 (fangraphs.com). He does bat left-handed, so he'll continue to draw attention from teams like the Cubs, who want a reliable short-term fix for a 2nd catcher. And at a good price - the Reds paid Bako $750,000 last year (baseball-reference.com).
