Rule V Draft - Cubs Take a Pass but Make a Trade, Veal Selected By Pirates

The Rule V Draft Major League and Minor League phases have been completed, the Cubs made no picks. They did, however, make a trade. The Reds selected David Patton from Colorado, and flipped him to Chicago for cash:

"He's got a great arm, he's got three-plus pitches," Cubs player development director Oneri Fleita said. "He's pitched out of the bullpen and gives us another guy who gives us some depth. He's got a plus arm, threw up to 94 miles an hour and throws strikes.

Patton hasn't pitched past High A yet, but did throw in both Hawaii Winter Ball and the Arizona Fall League. He's probably AAA talent, we'll see if he can stretch and snag a roster spot.

correction Donald Veal was taken by the Pittsburgh Pirates. He has a real chance of sticking there, they're bad enough to carry him. We'll see how things go in the Spring.

21 picks were made in the Major League phase. 16 pitchers. Ex-Cub Rocky Cherry to the Mets, off of the Orioles AAA roster.

Here's the draft-tracker.

On to round minor league phase....again, the Cubs pass....

Cubs lose Yusef Carter, selected by Oakland
and Mark Holliman taken by the Brewers

The Brewers were very active in the AAA phase. Only one player moved in the AA phase.

Veal has a ton of potential, but the odds he ever realizes it are slim to none. I think Holliman could end up being a useful 5th or 6th starter for some team.

I suspect the Buccos waive him in March.
