The Cubs will face Washington rookie Craig Stammen on Friday night. I looked at him after his debut in May, and he was quite unexciting. Nothing has changed, although I'm no longer sure he throws a sinker (probably just a four-seam fastball, but I'm using the generic FA label for all of his heaters).
| Type | # | vs LHH | vs RHH | MPH | PFX_X | PFX_Z | DEG | RPM |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| CH | 88 | 60 | 28 | 82.6 | -5.9 | 7.3 | 219.5 | 1,757.4 |
| CU | 92 | 42 | 50 | 79.3 | 1.5 | -4.3 | 85.8 | 857.8 |
| FA | 535 | 320 | 215 | 90.0 | -6.1 | 8.5 | 215.9 | 2,123.3 |
| SL | 25 | 3 | 22 | 82.5 | -0.1 | 1.5 | 178.8 | 348.5 |
The fastball/change-up combo looks pretty decent (see the flight paths below). Stammen's curveball has an unusually low spin rate, I'm not sure what to make of that, if anything.
Stammen's stuff is quite average, not a lot of grounders, not a lot of whiffs, not a lot of hard hit balls, though. He might be getting lucky in that regard, time will tell.

Harry it's ted. The Cubs seem to always have success against mediocre pitching but never against good pitching. Can you profile the Cubs averages or wins/losses against front rotation starters.. I think this will explain our woes. Our offense is good only against poor pitching.
Also I have a fantasy trade proposal that I think would solve our problems offensively. But it would require payroll flexability. The As are a bust and are selling. Trade for Holliday(bench Dome or Bradley) and Cabrera (replace Fonte)..I would give up Vitters, Fox, and Marshall for a shot at a WS. I know its unrealistic but what do you think?
Hey Ted - First, I think every team is the same in regards to facing quality pitching. I've seen this discussed before, and it really ends up being a circular question.
Good pitchers beat good teams. The pitchers that beat good teams are the good pitchers. The good pitchers tend to beat good teams and so on and so on.
Interesting trade idea. Giving up Vitters is far too much, considering his upside is beyond Holliday's. Cabrera is at the end of the line, and provides little to no offense, and his D value at 2nd wouldn't be enough to push the team to the top. Holliday has never hit that well outside of Coors, so I'm not sure he'd out produce Milton or Fukudome, who both can match Holliday in onbase skills.
Thank you Harry! I hope Bradley turns it around his swing looks awful. Do you ever break down offense or defense or just pitching? if so I would be interested to view a report on Jake Fox's batting: Class A or AAA?
Sincerely, Ted
