Just a few days ago I took a look at some in-house and outside candidates for the Cubs' center field job. With Curtis Granderson going to the Yankees, things have already shifted to the second tier. More changes could come Thursday morning (by the time you read this, actually), as the Cubs could lose or gain relevant pieces in the Rule 5 draft.
Two more names to consider, not that I want to. Scott Podsednik and Melky Cabrera. Cabrera could be available now that New York has Granderson, and Podsednik just won't go away.
CHONE gives Podsednik a -10 for batting runs in 2010, Jeff Zimmerman's UZR150 projections a -3 on defense. CHONE also has defensive projections now, and TotalZone disagrees with UZR, giving Pods a +4.
Melky gets a +6 from CHONE for batting and a -3 from UZR. TotalZone comes up with a -1 projection for Cabrera.
Put it all together, with your grains of salt, and here's where things sorta stand.
Acceptable Cabrera, Byrd, Cameron, Crisp
Not Good Rowand, Fuld, Ankiel, Podsednik
Not Likely Colvin, Jackson
Please No Camp, Guyer, Adduci
Me thinks Melky is now the Cubs' best option, amongst those I've considered so far. Be sure to check out the first post for links and more details.

HP, what do you think of Brett Gardner? Melky's probably the one the Yankees want to trade though.
The consensus appears to be plus on D, but not much at the plate. He takes a lot of pitches (too many), doesn't have much pop, makes plenty of contact when he does swing. He has plus speed, too.
I'd say he's "acceptable" with the bonus of being cheap and under control.
Yeah, Gardner probably won't give you much in terms of offense. He's as fast as anyone in the majors, though. He'll get on base, but he doesn't have much power at all. Seems like the Yankees highly value his defense and speed, and it doesn't look like they're even entertaining the thought of moving him.
I understand why you have Fuld in the "not good" category. But would that change at all if you platooned Sammy with, say, Reed Johnson? Would that bump him (er, them) up into "acceptable"?
B, no, it wouldn't.
Fuld has no platoon split (.040 benefit in minors, .125 reverse in the majors).
UZR projections have Reed at -5 and TotalZone at -10 in center field. Since they're about equal against lefties (I'll concede Johnson only a small edge) you're just giving up what could be a huge amount of defense for virtually no added offense.
Makes sense. I do recall noticing that RJ's centerfield UZR numbers are not good. I believe he's best in left field.
He is very good in left. He did make the best catch I've ever seen while playing center. DeRosa was in left, Woody in the bullpen sitting right by the fence where Reed went headlong into it.
btw, those rates I mentioned for Fuld are OPS
Your article is very good.I like it very much.
